Being a parent is not always easy, but being a working parent can be even more challenging when it comes to trying to truly connect with your children. Sometimes it feels like there simply are not enough hours in the day to balance work, your relationship, personal time, responsibilities, and family life all at once.

As a mother of two girls who are 10 years apart, I understand that feeling all too well.
It can be easy to let our children entertain themselves with video games, tablets, or television while we try to catch up on everything else life demands from us. And honestly, sometimes life just gets overwhelming. Sitting our kids in front of a screen can feel like a much-needed break or even a “free babysitter” for a little while.
But over time, those moments can slowly create distance.
That’s why screen-free moments matter so much.
Taking even an hour or two out of your day — or even your week — to intentionally connect with your child can help build a bond that lasts forever. The best part is that it does not have to be expensive, complicated, or perfectly planned.
One of my favorite ways to connect with my children is through arts and crafts. Not only does it create quality time together, but it also challenges both the parent’s mind and the child’s mind. Crafting encourages creativity, imagination, cooperative play, problem-solving, and out-of-the-box thinking.
Coloring requires attention to detail and patience. As children work on their coloring pages, they learn to concentrate on a task, which can translate to better focus in other areas of their lives, including schoolwork.
Here are 5 screen-free activities that can help parents connect with their kids in meaningful ways.
1. Puzzles
Puzzles have always been a joy in our household. There is something satisfying about working together toward one goal and watching the picture slowly come together piece by piece.
Some of our favorite family memories have happened while sitting around a table doing
puzzles together and talking about life.
Sometimes, when we are especially proud of one we completed, we even use Mod Podge to preserve and frame it as artwork for our home.
2. Create Your Own Garden
Starting a garden together can create such a strong sense of accomplishment and pride for kids. Watching something you planted together slowly grow over time teaches patience, responsibility, and teamwork.
And the best part is that it does not have to be complicated. You can start small with a single flower pot and a packet of seeds.
Kids love being involved in choosing the flowers, decorating the pots, watering the plants, and watching their hard work bloom.
3. Go for a Walk Together
Sometimes the simplest activities create the best memories.
Going for walks together gives parents and children uninterrupted time to talk, laugh, and explore. In our family, we made walks more exciting by identifying different bugs along the way.
You can even create a small nature journal where your child can draw or write about the
insects, flowers, birds, or other things they discover during each walk.
It turns an ordinary walk into a fun little adventure.
4. Cook or Bake Together
Cooking together has always been one of my favorite bonding activities with my daughter. For a long time, baking became “our thing.” We would search for recipes together and try new desserts just for fun. Some turned out amazing, and some turned into funny kitchen disasters that we still laugh about today.
Cooking together teaches kids important life skills while also creating memories that they will carry with them forever.
5. Craft Together
Crafting will always be my favorite screen-free activity.
There is something special about sitting together and creating something completely unique with your own hands. We have spent hours crafting, laughing, experimenting, and coming up with silly ideas together.
We have made gifts for teachers, silly puppets, dollhouses, tiny communities, and so many random projects using materials we already had around the house.
The best part about crafting is that there are no rules. Kids get the freedom to imagine, create, and express themselves in their own way.
And sometimes those creative moments lead to the best conversations and strongest
connections.
That is one of the biggest reasons I created T&C Crafts, LLC.
I wanted to create monthly craft experiences that help families slow down and spend
intentional time together. Every T&C Crafts subscription box is designed to encourage
creativity, imagination, hands-on learning, and meaningful bonding moments between parents and children.
Because at the end of the day, the crafts themselves are only part of the experience.
The real magic happens in the memories you create together.
